From Iron Curtain to Metal Maven: HKUST Interview with Alex Unveiling the Journey of 3DK Tech
Discover the fascinating narrative behind 3DK Tech's groundbreaking innovations and witness Alex's inspiring trajectory from a driven graduate to an industry trailblazer, as the HKUST Alumni Centre presents an enlightening interview piece.
Over the past decade, the world of 3D printing has witnessed remarkable advancements, and at the forefront of this dynamic industry is our founder, Alex Tilita. With an unwavering passion for innovation and a deep-rooted fascination for sci-fi series like Star Trek – The Next Generation, Alex has emerged as a visionary in the field of metal 3D printing. As an HKUST graduate with a strong background in manufacturing technologies since 2006, he is driven to push boundaries and unlock the extraordinary potential of this cutting-edge technology.
Born and raised in Romania during the era of the Iron Curtain, Alex's desire for a brighter future was ignited by witnessing the lingering effects of dictatorship on his country's economy. Determined to take control of his destiny, he set his sights on Asia, believing that Hong Kong, with its limitless opportunities, held the key to his ambitions.
"I had a strong intuition that Asia, especially Hong Kong, would provide everything I needed."
- Alexandru Tilita
Venturing into Asia
Following his undergraduate studies, our founder, Alex, embarked on a transformative journey by enrolling in a course in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). His pursuit of a PhD degree led him to unravel the primary barrier hindering the adoption of metal 3D printing: durability. Drawing on his prior experience with non-conventional manufacturing, he invented Ultrasonic Selective Laser Melting (USLM), a groundbreaking patented technology capable of enhancing durability by up to 200 times. This pivotal work caught the attention of two HKUST alumni, Ahmed Benjelloun and later Zhong Yinsheng, prompting them to join forces and establish 3DK Tech Limited. Supported by HKUST's Entrepreneurship Center and Knowledge Transfer Office, our company leverages Ultrasonic technology to revolutionize metal 3D printing.
Advancements in 3D Printing
While plastic 3D printing has garnered significant attention, metal 3D printing is rapidly gaining prominence in high-value industrial production. We acknowledge certain shortcomings within the industry, and we are determined to address them head-on. We have identified key challenges that need to be tackled; printing and manufacturing processes, subpar printed part quality, and limited material selection are areas for improvement.
"Our patented USLM technology is revolutionizing the industry by employing ultrasonic vibrations to precisely control the transition of metals from liquid to solid, resulting in superior 3D printing of high-quality parts. Our technology boasts a remarkable 60% faster printing speed than traditional metal 3D printing, while reducing production costs by an impressive 75%."

A Moment of Triumph: Geneva International Exhibition
The year 2023 marked a proud milestone for 3DK Tech, as our groundbreaking USLM technology earned us a prestigious Gold Medal with Congratulations of the Jury at the Geneva International Exhibition.
"It was an incredible achievement, but let's remain realistic—countless challenges lie ahead, including securing adequate funding."
- Alexandru Tilita
Embarking on the American Frontier
Despite the hurdles, our founder's relentless pursuit of innovation drives him to explore the next frontier: the American market. With a remarkable journey thus far, Alex serves as an inspiration to aspiring student entrepreneurs, urging them to seize opportunities, embrace a continuous learning mindset, and fearlessly challenge themselves.
"Take action, never stop learning, and continuously challenge yourself"
